Fargo Weaves a Classic Tale

BECAUSE: Mike Milligan recited Lewis Carroll's 19th century poem "Jabberwocky" from Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There, -- a poem in the classic shape of a young warrior triumphing over a monster that's, in fact, a ridiculous story full of nonsense words. It was tucked into a deadly and serious series made up of delightful absurdities. One such absurdity happened with the second Alice reference, as Simone put on her best Flo imitation to conjure up some potential parting words for her father: "Kiss my grits."

CBS
WHAT HAPPENED: Thanksgiving's come and gone early this year, and not just because CVS is already selling Reese's Christmas Trees. CBS decided to air the Thanksgiving-themed "Livewire" instead of an episode about a series of bombings in National City due to the tragic events in Paris. But as EW recapper Chancellor Agard says, "The switch doesn't seem to have hurt the season's flow" -- after all, family drama is relatable year-round. Mama Danvers is in National City to spend Turkey Day with her daughters and though she's brimming with pride for Supergirl, she has gripes for Alex about allowing her sister into harm's way. This leads to Alex exploding that she works for the DEO and her entire life is wrapped up in protecting Kara, so why hasn't she ever been enough? If you didn't tear up when Dr. Danvers told Alex, "You've always been my Supergirl," then you might just be a metahuman. Speaking of...
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: Monday's villain was Livewire, a disgruntled CatCo employee who both wreaks havoc on the company's electronics and manages to bring Kara and Cat Grant closer together. The AV Club points out the importance of this connection: "Supergirl isn't just a superhero show with a female lead; it's a show that sets out to explore super-heroics through an explicitly female lens. Though Kara has a couple of male sidekicks, her most important relationships are with women: Her supportive older sister, her powerful boss, her angelic holographic mother, and -- someday down the line -- her power-hungry aunt." The episode does bring up one daddy issue, though: Mama Danvers reveals to Alex and Kara that their father didn't die in a plane crash; he was taken by the DEO after Kara's arrival and, she presumes, he died at the hands of Hank Henshaw... Alex's boss.

Jane the Virgin
The CW
WHAT HAPPENED: Monday's episode of Jane the Virgin featured a whole bunch of time jumps, which meant we were flying through stories and racking up milestones. Said milestones, as EW recapper Nina Terrero points out, "aren't always sunny-colored and rainbow bright." Jane went from being excited for her first day of grad school to being on academic probation; Magda went from being in jail to having a hook and standing over Ivan's dead body; Petra goes from having Milos in the doctor's office when she finds out she's having twins to getting him arrested for internet scamming; and most importantly, it all ends in a time jump straight into Thanksgiving where Jane has gone from not being over Michael (and shouting at Rafael because she doesn't know how to handle Mateo being a baby with a $40 million trust) to saying yes to a date with him. Happy Thanksgiving, one and all.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: Though this episode had a clear connection to education, Vulture "feared a Nancy Reagan situation" when the show first publicized Michelle Obama's "Let Girls Learn" initiative within the ep. Jane the Virgin has been involved in political advocacy before, but Vulture notes that "there's a difference between a show giving voice to political stances that arise out of its own world, and a show that becomes a preachy soapbox." Ultimately, however, that was not the case; as the recapper said, "I was wrong. This episode was pretty great." Now, perhaps FLOTUS can assist in getting Jane off academic probation...

Dancing With the Stars
ABC
WHAT HAPPENED: With Tom Bergeron's reveal that there would be no DWTS elimination on Monday night due to Tamar Braxton removing herself from the show for health reasons, came the realization that we just watched two rope-themed dances, one Backstreet Boy's traumatic backstory, an American hero rip his shirt open mid-salsa, Carlos finally stop weeping after the departure of his wife Alexa, and 12 -- 12! -- gloriously sequined dances all with basically no stakes. But you will find no complaints here: Nick, Bindi, Alek, and Carlos are all moving on to next week's Finals!
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: And, sure, the dances were great on Monday night and most of the Final Four have reached peak-DWTS spray tan, but the Semi-Finals were really all about the contestant's emotional pre-dance packages that weaved the tales of how their lives have led them to competing for the coveted Mirrorball. The Semi-Finals' main scene stealers turned out to be two little brothers: Aaron Carter told how his family's tragedies brought the two singers even closer together; and then there was Bindi's emotional tribute to her late father, Steve Irwin, which featured her incredibly articulate little bro Robert (you may recognize him from his bowl cut and being adorable in the audience all season long) who, as Yahoo TV put it, stands as "another pinnacle of humanity" alongside his angelic sister, likely the future owner of a Mirrorball trophy.
