5 Great Things For This Weekend

1.

PopWatch Confessional: I tried to play 'New Girl's fake drinking game The fact that True American was invented as a joke hasn't stopped people from attempting to make actual rules for the game. This is because the show hasn't enumerated how to play beyond a few core concepts.

  1. Dick Smith, makeup artist of 'The Godfather,' 'The Exorcist': A tribute Dick Smith, the Oscar-winning makeup effects legend behind 'The Exorcist', 'Taxi Driver', and 'The Godfather', who passed away on July 30 at age 92, was more than just Hollywood’s sanguine Colonel Sanders with a secret recipe for plasma that became a cinematic standard. He was a magician -- a Houdini armed with foam latex, food coloring, and Karo syrup.

  2. Enough, already: Why I'm quitting 'The Leftovers' For weeks, I’ve stuck it out with 'The Leftovers', which many critics (including me) have described as one of the bleakest, most brutal, most depressing dramas on television. But it wasn’t until Sunday’s episode, 'Gladys', that I decided I'd had enough. I refuse to watch another minute of this show.

  3.  'Blood Meridian' deserves a director who understands the Western genre With James Franco's recent test footage for his not-to-be 'Blood Meridian' film adaptation now online, it's time to think about what we want from a movie version of the landmark novel.

  4.  This 10-year-old girl is the future of guitar shredding Not only has gaming apparently taught Audrey how to wail hard enough to keep up with Kerry King, but she also seems to have picked up a couple of other skills too.

Guardians of the Galaxy

The genius of Gunn's superhero send-up is its cheeky, anything-goes absurdity. I've been pretty mixed on Marvel movies over the years -- some have dazzled me, others have left me depressed. But 'Guardians' is the first one that feels excitingly unpredictable.

Get on Up How on earth is a movie about James Brown rated PG-13? The Godfather of Soul not only oozed sin and raw sexuality from the stage, but his life off it was one long rap sheet of domestic violence charges, blackout drug benders, and indiscriminate gunplay. To be fair, all of this is touched on in Tate Taylor's ('The Help') biopic of the Hardest Working Man in Show Business -- but with kid gloves. 'Get on Up' too often plays it safe when it needs to be dangerous.

And So It Goes The two Hollywood legends rise above the tedium on the strength of their experience. Douglas is refreshingly senior for the first time onscreen; he has the creaky gait and whistling-dentures speech of the nearly 70-year-old man that he is. And thought Keaton doesn't stray outside her neurotic-sophisticate range, the part allows for a sweet throwback to 'Annie Hall' as her character moonlights as a lounge singer with hippy-dippy vibes.
