The Oscars
8:30 ABC

After Seth Mac Farlane's demented shenanigans last year, the Oscars are in the more soothing hands of Ellen DeGeneres, returning to host for the first time since 2007. She follows a ratings spike in the coveted 18:00-49 age demo, so it might be in her best interests to loosen her bow tie and deliver a little naughty with the nice. The race itself gives the telecast some welcome drama: a too-close-to-call Best Picture battle between Gravity and 12 Years a Slave, with American Hustle a formidable dark horse. (See our Oscar predictions on page 30.) For those seeking a dose of classic Hollywood, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have recruited the reclusive Kim Novak — star of Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo — to make a rare appearance as part of the show's tribute to movie heroes and heroines. The night's losers can find comfort in the fact that Hitch himself never went home with an Oscar. Anthony Breznican

IN THEATERS THIS WEEKEND

Non-Stop — a tense but ludicrous cat-and-mouse thriller at 30,000 feet. Neeson plays Bill Marks, a grieving alcoholic air marshal on board a transatlantic flight to London. His soul is still stinging from the death of his young daughter, but right from the get-go we see that he's good at his job as he sizes up the boarding passengers, looking for the tells and tics of potential danger. B – Chris Nashawaty

Stalingrad The movie is a rah-rah tribute to the scrappy comrades who fought the Nazis in what became one of the bloodiest battles in history.  B- CN
Omar A harrowing, humane Arabic-language import about life under occupation that's part Romeo-and-Juliet love story and part twisty chess-pawn thriller.  It manages to punch you in the gut and break your heart at the same time. A-    CN
